Education Engagement Hubs offer programming on most school days during school hours to help middle and high school-age students focus on academics while managing challenges that lead to absences, suspensions, or leaving school before graduating.
Programming includes life skills workshops, homework help, individual goal setting, and hands-on projects that develop academic, reading, and teamwork skills.

Who can attend?
Middle and high school age learners (12-21) facing educational barriers such as suspension, absenteeism, online education programs, and more are welcome to attend.
How much does it cost?
All programs and services offered by The Book Works are grant funded and provided at no cost to the learners and families we serve.
What do you do at the Hub?
A learner’s day may include a combination of online or school related coursework, homework and academic support, literacy development, social-emotional and academic skill building, and/or goal-setting and problem-solving.
What should they bring?
For security and safety reasons, backpacks and large bags are not permitted beyond the front desk and will be checked into a secure area.
Learners may bring small personal items (wallet, keys, phone), essential medications, and any snacks, drinks, or food into our program rooms.
Is this a school?
Education Engagement Hubs are not a replacement for a learner’s school or an independent school program. They are community-based spaces designed to help learners stay connected to their education and receive additional support.
Can my learner attend after school?
Education Engagement Hubs are only open during JCPS operational school-day hours, Monday-Thursday 12:00-4:00pm. We are expanding our services in September 2026 to offer after school programming.
What if my learner doesn’t want to participate?
We understand that some young people may be hestitant to participate—especially if they’ve had difficult experiences in educational environments. Our approach is relationship-centered and focused on building trust, understanding challenges, and giving young people a voice in their goals and next steps.
How will the Hubs support learning and returning to school?
Education Engagement hubs have all the educational materials necessary to assist students with academic assignments and activities. Learners will work on homework or online assignments, learn about options for making up credits and getting on track to graduate, and connect with in-school resources and supports.
Learners set daily actionable goals while staff assist them to meet them. The assignments and activities completed in the Hubs may be eligible to serve as JCPS Backpack Defense/Learner Portfolio items.
Who will my learner be working with in the Hubs?
Our Education Engagement Hubs are facilitated by full-time The Book Works staff members and coordinators, Education Advocates, and supported by AmeriCorps Education Access Fellows. Learners will collaborate with our team and their peers to develop social-emotional and academic development skills.
